ReplyDeleteGreat list! I feel inspired to do my own list with my favourite actresses in it! :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments!
ReplyDeleteTony: Ha! Yeah, she's definitely a guilty pleasure, but I couldn't leave her off!
letsgotothemovies: Thank you! And I'd love to see who you have on your list as well.
My Top Five would be:
ReplyDelete1. Louise Brooks
2. Bette Davis
3. Barbara Stanwyck
4. Joan Fontaine
5. Joan Blondell
And I would have a separate list for those obscure actresses that I love to see in small parts and sometimes starring in low-budget movies in the 1930s and 1940s -
Frances Drake, Joan Woodbury, Rochelle Hudson, Adrienne Ames, Leila Hyams, Sally Eilers, Marie Wilson, Una Merkel, Anne Shirley, Betty Field, Kathleen Howard, Jody Gilbert ... I would have a hard time narrowing it down to 10.
And you know who they are even if you don't know their names! For example, Joan Woodbury is the tiny queen in the scene in Bride of Frankenstein where Dr. Pretorious is showing his tiny creations to Dr. Frankenstein.
Myrna Loy and Meryl Streep have to be on my list.
ReplyDeleteWhat terrific list. Bette Davis is getting new interest in the US thanks to the new TV show "Feud", about her public battles with Joan Crawford on the set of "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?" I also love your inclusion of Pam Grier, and especially the "Queen Of Artsploitation", Christina Lindberg. I posted a story about a recent interview she did, which was terrific! - https://johnrieber.com/2014/08/11/christina-lindberg-speaks-the-queen-of-artsploitation-bares-all/
