#69. Ginger Snaps (2000)

DVD Synopsis: Ginger and Brigitte, two sisters trapped in suburbia, are obsessed with mayhem, torture and death until they get a taste of the real thing. Bitten by a wild animal, Ginger begins to mutate into a sexy, uncontrolled woman, with some nasty canine tendencies.  Is it a virus? Is it a curse? Or the first step towards becoming a vicious werewolf!

I first learned about Ginger Snaps while perusing one of the many on-line horror forums, and I wish to hell I could remember which forum it was because I owe them a shout-out, not to mention a ‘thank you’.

Who'd have guessed that, in the year 2000, it would’ve been possible to make a completely original movie about werewolves?  But that’s exactly what Ginger Snaps is; it’s bloody, scary, and even manages to throw in some interesting characters along the way.  If you’re like me, and hadn’t heard of Ginger Snaps before now, then you owe it to yourself to check this film out.  It’s a hidden gem that really has no business staying hidden anymore.

I'm not sure how I came about seeing this film, but do remember thinking how surprisingly original it was. I haven't seen it in years, I'll definitely have to put it on my re-watch list!

@Klaus: Definitely worth a re-watch! I plan to check it out again soon myself (I picked up the sequel, Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed, at a discount DVD store, and my plan is to set aside an afternoon and watch this and the original back-to-back).

Any excuse to watch Ginger Snaps again is a good one!

I'm sure that no one else here has seen the Selena Gomez movie ANOTHER CINDERELLA STORY, but the director (who has a bit of a horror past) did something amusing and cast Emily Perkins & Katharine Isabelle as the wicked stepsisters.

It was great seeing them together again, and it made it much easier to sit through the movie with my daughter!

Ian: I know who Selena Gomez is because my kids are of the age when they watch Disney Channel. I must admit it seems an odd forum to present a horror nod such as this one, but it's a cool one nonetheless.

Thanks for the post.

I completely agree. This is a great werewolf movie and from the year 2000 nonetheless! I watched this only a few years ago, so it completely took me by surprise because even though I was aware of the hype surrounding the movie, I was never part of it. This movie also introduced me to the ever lovely Katharine Isabelle—a very welcome bonus!
